Typically, our expectations are low with budget carriers: cramped seats; extra fees for all amenities; and not much else. However, Eurowings, Lufthansa’s low-cost brand, is changing the narrative. Firmly in the budget space, Eurowings subtly introduced several features that are typically reserved for full-service airlines such as the business class seating, lounge access, and complimentary food services.
So how does this hybrid model compare with other European low-cost airlines? I flew Eurowings recently and explored the experience, from legroom to lounge life to evaluate whether there is more value for money. Spoiler alert: there is a lot more to this carrier than meets the eye.
Lounge Access: A Rare Perk for a Budget Airline

One surprise offering? Business class passengers on Eurowings will have access to lounges, more specifically the Vienna Lounge and Lufthansa business lounges at select airports. This makes for a comfortable and more spacious experience, something that rarely exists in the low-cost carrier options. If you need a quiet place to work or just want something to eat before the flight, having access to a lounge is an appreciated bonus.
Onboard Meals: Included in Business Plus

Eurowings‘ Business Plus fare includes a complimentary sandwich or roll and a drink. While this meal may not be the most substantial or comparable to full-service options, it is more than you could ask for as a low-cost airline. In addition to being free, it is a smaller benefit that adds value overall, without increasing cost.
In-Flight Entertainment & Power: None Onboard

Eurowings has no seatback screens, no overhead entertainment, and no power outlets, this is the typical approach of a low-cost carrier. Travelers should plan accordingly, as there are no movies, music, or portals to charge their devices.
Download entertainment prior to the flight and bring a charging power bank. Although, some aircraft may be equipped with reasonably poor wi-fi, which is not strong enough for a streaming service. Only around 10% of the Eurowings fleet currently offers WiFi. If available, you’ll spot a WiFi logo on the seatback. Prices range from $5 to $12 USD, so while it’s not free, it’s useful in a pinch, if you’re lucky enough to get a connected aircraft.
Cabin Baggage: Surprisingly Generous

This is where Eurowings really shines for budget travelers: their cabin baggage allowance. Travelers can take one small under-seat item plus two larger cabin bags. This is much more generous than most low-cost competitors, and should save you checked bag fees if you are clever and plan accordingly.
Overall Verdict: Budget with a Touch of Business

Eurowings markets as a hybrid and it has low fares with some premium perks. Eurowings has an advantage compared to other European budget airlines in their price point because they offer lounge access, free meals (with certain fare types), and your bags are free (up to 23kg), too. While there aren’t business class seats or luxury inflight offerings, you really do get great value, especially for short-haul business travelers or more budget-conscious leisure travelers.
